I do think that it's not quite right for me, and bellroy's slightly smaller via work bag might be better on a daily daily, but I do use the extra space at times. Now I am looking to swap to some sort of backpack carry for travel.but because I want to have more freedom with a new child to carry assorted things and assist with my baby, not because I can't handle the carry lol. It got uncomfortable sometimes, but probably about the same swap shoulders every hour level of uncomfortable. I traveled with a 35-40L Pakt original duffel bag slung over one shoulder. I'm now so aware of the things in my bag every time I open it, compared to any other backpack where my general use-case was opening from the top quickly to get my laptop and charger anyway. The weight doesn't bother me for EDC, and the shallow but wide opening makes organizing simpler, without needing to lay it down to open clamshell or dig into the depths of a bag from the top down. The ability to easily access the entire compartment while carrying it is also great.

The side pockets being actually quick access (button and magnetic closure dump pockets, no zips) are great. I prefer it to my able daily carry, nomatic navigator, a host of bellroy backpacks, black ember forge20, and some more I've forgotten as my manybaggers journey has taken me from bag to bag trying to find my perfect carry. I’m sure a larger framed person could cinch a smaller back pack up high enough while riding for the weight to carry as well as a messenger bag, but I’m very petite (5’2”) and no backpack that could also carry a 16” MacBook would work that way for me.īut when walking, it makes much more sense to spread the load across both shoulders instead of just hanging it off one. It also limits your movement bc it can more easily fall off sideways when you lean on tight turns. I used to joke that it felt like a little fat goblin had jumped on and was trying to take me down lol. (Not saying non-cyclists can’t/shouldn’t use them btw, just explaining why they’re much better for riding than walking)Ī backpack’s load hangs lower and ends up just pulling down on your shoulders.

While riding, a heavy load feels like almost nothing in a properly fitting messenger and you’re free to move your body in the ways needed to maneuver your bike around city streets/traffic. When you’re leaning forward over your handlebars, a properly worn messenger lets the load sit up high where it’s supported by your whole upper back instead of just edit: hanging from your shoulders. Lol yeah, because messenger bags (like Chrome, not the ones that are clearly just meant to be more casual briefcases) are designed for carrying stuff while riding a bike. My bike ride over to the coffee shop I will use a messenger back 95% of the time. My walk over the coffee shop I will use a backpack 99% of the time. But from a usability standpoint is can be really nice, under the right conditions. Having one shoulder carry weight is terrible for the body. Carrying something doesn't require much of either. That seems more stabilizer muscles and flexibility. There's a reason yoga is a proven form of strength training as it focuses on symmetry.Ĭorrect me if I am wrong, but it focuses on symmetry of movement, not symmetry of strength. In the summer and winter I mostly use panniers though for longer trips. I can bike around for a long time that way, especially in the spring/fall.

On a race geometry bike it is just resting on your back a lot more than your neck/shoulder. Your shoulder and neck will hurt if used over 15 minutes at a time. Pretty much anything more than a few pounds is too much in a sling.
